About Biinjitiwaabik Zaaging Anishinaabek

An Anishinaabe community on Lake Nipigon, a member of the Nokiiwin Tribal Council and the Union of Ontario Indians

Our Name and History: Biinjitiwaabik Zaaging Anishinaabek was formerly known as Rocky Bay First Nation. Families from Gull Bay, Sand Point, Red Rock, McIntyre Bay and Chapleau were living here in the early 1950s and were formally constituted as the Rocky Bay Band in 1960. In 1971 the reserve lands at MacDiarmid were set apart as Rocky Bay I.R. No. 1.

Population: Our Nation has more than 750 members, with approximately 330 living on-reserve and 420 living off-reserve.

Location and Treaty: We are located on the southeast shore of Lake Nipigon in Greenstone, Ontario, next to the community of MacDiarmid and about 185 km from Thunder Bay. Our reserve lies within the territory described by the Robinson-Superior Treaty of 1850. In 2006 the Nation filed a claim stating that it did not enter or adhere to that treaty, and asked the courts to recognize its Aboriginal title.

Culture and Economy: Our ancestors survived by hunting, fishing and gathering food, and the Ojibwe clan (doodem) system remains part of who we are. Ojibway language is taught as a subject at our school, and our lands continue to support hunting, trapping and trade. We are a member of Waaskiinaysay Ziibi Inc., an economic development corporation of five Lake Nipigon First Nations.
